Based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, (half-way between Detroit and Chicago), 33rd Street Band is a premier live band that has performed at weddings, festivals, corporate events, conventions, night clubs, and city concerts throughout the midwest region, and now all the way to the West coast.
Latest News The band had a busier than usual January and February. The highlight was a gig done in Bellingham, Washington with Ray Charles personna Frank Rondell. It was a sold-out house and one of the best crowds ever! March and April will be a time for member vacations to sunny locales, learning new tunes, taxes (yuk!), and revamping of the band's marketing efforts. This includes an overhaul of the website and making some new and exciting connections and partnerships. Stay tuned on that! The summer and fall calendar is filling up fast with great and diverse gigs.
Bio 33rd Street Band is a diverse group of seasoned musicians who share a love of the timeless music of the great horn bands. Each member brings his unique background to the music to make a unified wall of sound, creating fantastic big horn rock and roll excitement!
The founder of 33rd Street Band, Steve VerMeulen, envisioned a big showband with a "killer horn section" to play the music of the great horn bands. In early 2003 the band came together in the basement of Steve's house, located off of 33rd Street. The band started out doing tunes from the likes of Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Joe Cocker, and The Blues Brothers. In the years following the band's repertoire has continued to expand with many, many tunes from Van Morrison, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, The Hollies, Lighthouse, Average White Band, The Buckinghams, Santana, lots of motown, soul, blues, and some jazz. The band is extremely versatile. This is a very unique live band that appeals to audiences of all ages.
The band has extensively toured the region performing at festivals, corporate events, conventions, city concerts, nightclubs, fundraisers, weddings and other private parties. They are equally comfortable in a concert setting or performing as a dance band. 33rd Street Band also occasionally teams up with the acclaimed Blues Brothers impersonators, the Soul Men of Cleveland, Ohio, (www.thesoulmen.com) to authentically recreate the Blues Bros. phenomenon. Additionally, the band has teamed up with a Canadian performer named Frank Rondell to recreate the Ray Charles show (www.raycharlestributeshow.com/).
